Building for the long term

The most sustainable building is one that is designed well, built well and lasts. We plan for the whole life of what we build: the energy and water it uses, the materials it is made from, and the people and places around it.

Our approach

Six commitments for every project

We apply these from the first study of a site to long after handover.

  • Design first

We put orientation, daylight, shade and natural ventilation before mechanical systems.

  • Use less

We use efficient design and equipment to reduce the energy and water a building needs over its life.

  • Protect what is there

We retain existing trees and natural features wherever we can, plant native species and protect soil and water.

  • Build to last

We choose durable, lower-carbon and responsibly sourced materials, and design buildings to be maintained, adapted and used for generations.

  • Build cleanly

We control dust, noise, water and waste on site, and reuse or recycle wherever practical.

  • Measure and improve

We record what we use and waste, review it, and set ourselves higher standards on each project.

Nature and place

Trees, water and shade are part of the design

Mature trees, shade and water make places cooler, healthier and better to live in. We plan around existing trees wherever we can, add planting suited to the local climate, and design for rainwater to be captured and reused.

Benchmarks and commitments

Sustainability benchmarks

  • An environmental management system modelled on ISO 14001.
  • Design to a recognised green building rating, such as IGBC, GRIHA, LEED or EDGE, where one suits the project.
  • Reporting on our environmental performance as our work grows.

These are commitments. Hazaar does not currently hold any environmental certification or rating.
